Obama is insisting on a trillion dollar tax increase, which will hit small businesses, low and middle class income as well as the wealthy before he makes a deal with the Republicans on the debt ceiling. In 2009 in an interview with NBC’s Chuck Todd Obama when he was asked “Explain how raising taxes on anyone during a deep recession is going to help with the economy.” To which Obama responded “Normally, you don’t raise taxes in a recession, which is why we haven’t and why we’ve instead cut taxes. You don’t raise taxes in a recession. We haven’t raised taxes in a recession.” Todd then reminded Obama that he had promised to raise taxes on “some of the wealthiest” Americans. “We have not proposed a tax hike for the wealthy that would take effect in the middle of a recession. Even the proposals that have come out of Congress – which by the way were different from the proposals I put forward – still wouldn’t kick in until after the recession was over. The last thing you want to do is raise taxes in the middle of a recession because that would just suck up – take more demand out of the economy and put business further in a hole.”
So in 2009 raising taxes during a recession in bad but in 2011 it’s ok. Why is Obama flip flopping on tax increases during a deep recession?

Obama could use basically the same argument he uses now – just leave out the “recession” word and replace it with “economic boom”.

Obama could say we need to spend like crazy during good times, because the roads are falling apart and the country needs a overhaul.
Obama could argue either way and still sound convincing.

Actually, recessions are when you need to spend money. Look up Keynesian economic theory if you don’t understand why. Bill Clinton showed that economic boom times is when Democrats can balance the budget, but now is not the time for a balanced budget. A balanced budget would actually make this recession much worse.

I can turn this around though and ask why Republicans always ask for more military spending regardless of how secure we currently are or whether we are at war or at peace. They also ask for tax cuts (mostly for the wealthy) regardless of the budget situation or the economic situation.

How exactly can you prove we would have been in another Great Depression and how do you prove that the steps taken prevented it from happening? What about the Great Depression to come when we’re called on our debt?

Great Depression of the 1930′s had many causes. I learned that the main cause was a stockmarket crash and structural flaws in banks(overleveraging?) encouraged by bad monetary policy similar to what happened this decade, there was also a drought during that time that ruined agriculture. Well of course I don’t think they printed as much money then as the fed is printing now. So how is it different from the depression America is going in?

Economist believe that the deflation in the early part of the depression is in part what make it so bad. Prices fell as much as 10% a year. There was no unemployment benefits then and initially the government tried to balance the budget by cutting spending and they did not intervene to save the banks until later. The FED could not print money because we were on the gold standard until 1933. In almost all respects the actions of the government and the fed now is the oppisite of what they did in in the early part of the depression.

There is no “Obama recession”. Move toward the light.

And the Carter recession was mostly due to the oil embargo he enacted because of the Iran hostage situation. What else do you think he should have done?

I have no problems whatsoever being “somewhat inconvenienced” if it helped 400 Americans live.
