Question by ima nice guy: What is the government doing to keep us from going into another great depression?
My sister told me that if it wasn’t for all the help from the government, we would be going into another great depression. I don’t really know what that means and she couldn’t really explain it. What is the government doing to keep up from going into another great depression? Also I was thinking, if the government during the great depression had helped like our government is doing now, would there have ever been a great depression at all? Or is my sister wrong and just repeating something she just heard somebody else say?

Full detail and sources would be very helpful.

Best answer:

Answer by yetti
The government did do a lot during the great depression…the thing is that it did not help….what got us out of that mess was WWII……we are trying the same things now, and it won’t work now either.

Question by Looking4mypathoflife: who thinks were going to go into a double dip recession/depression?
notice how right before the market crashes, in the stock charts it shows that stocks go way up momentarily and then *bam* the next day stocks are down in the dumps. Through all of the jibber jabber on the news they are saying that stocks for 2011 are expected to jump 10%, does anyone think stocks if indeed they do jump, are just preparing to tank?

Best answer:

Answer by Ibredd
Yes a dangerous time is coming, in the so called depression people generally at least had some chickens, a cow and a garden to fall back on, that is no longer the case

force a recession in 2011 if the economy fails to show double digit growth by then?
Doh! income brought into THIS year….

Best answer:

Answer by HATE MALE
i don’t know if that’s actually true, since i think the source of that idea is the discredited economist art laffer. i would guess it would result in another recession because moving $ 2/share in income from 2011 to 2010 means a huge boost to earnings this year (say, from $ 3 to $ 5) and a huge decline in them next year (say, from $ 5 to $ 3), assuming they don’t have a huge increase in business in 2011. to make up for that decrease in earnings they might try to cut costs by firing more people. since the stock market judges everything from year to year, they will see $ 5 in earnings in 2010, and $ 3 in 2011, and view it negatively. this will cause the stock price to tumble. this is just my guess on the reasoning.

Question by .: Could the great USA depression/recession (2011) have been planned to turn USA into socialist country?
White Middle Class America [WMCA] was always disparaging socialism and very much anti-communist. Now WMCA has lost their jobs and homes in droves and many are homeless living at the beach, out of their car etc and cannot get any financial help from the government (welfare, food stamps, etc…) Other countries like UK, France, Australia and Canada take care of their people even though none are “communist” or “socialist”, they are considered socialist by many an American.

The WMCA used to criticize people (mainly other races) on welfare, turning up their noses at them as if they were subhumans unworthy of living, and to these aforementioned foreign countries. Now they’re in the same boat.

Could this boat be the breaking point for the WMCA to demand a socialist (or rather socialized) USA regime? Thoughts?
@Mr 1911: thank you for your honest opinion. I hear a lot of Americans complain about socialism so I’m trying to understand: if your country were now socialist you would not be in the mess you are. (I grew up in a once socialist country). Would you rather stay where you are rather than receive governement assistance?? Assistance which YOU already paid for, if you pay taxes, except your money has gone to finance wars and on top of that you’re likely to never see your retirement, 401k, pension or social security. Again, I am honestly wondering on opinions here to understand how you think.

Best answer:

Answer by Intervalse
no, it will take a few more post-cold war generations for americans to start having educated opinions about socialism. right now it’s just a conservative buzzword meaning “evil.”

What do you think? Answer below!
