Question by Mylee: What were the economic problems during the Great Depression in America that caused such social misery?
I’m writing an essay. Here is the question:

Compare and contrast the approaches of the democratic and republican parties (Hoover and Roosevelt) to the economic and social problems during the Great Depression of the 30s in America.

My structure for the essay is for each paragraph, this:
ECONOMIC PROBLEM
SOCIAL CONSEQUENCES
DEM&REP APPROACHES

So I need about 5 or 6 MAJOR economic problems of the Great Depression, such as unemployment, food shortages, etc. Please help?

Wow, let me address your issues in reverse.

Very little new knowledge (other than weapons and medicine) come from the US anymore. Our schools have been dumbing down for 30 years and our trade deficit has always been enormous (which means WE buy foreign goods, almost nobody else uses American products.) Americans make software but name a single computer that is manufactured in the US?

We are the backbone of International Military Conflict, but when third world nations want help they go to France or Germany, the US is frigging useless at actually HELPING people. We just hand money over to dictators. In population we are small, in contribution we are weak, in trouble-making we are great. Does that sound like anybody’s backbone?

This recession was caused by a speculative bubble in the housing markets caused by deregulation and over-zealously given and under secured mortgages. Why is it the worst recession in American History? I’m not sure it is (they had a mean one during John Quincy Adam’s time that might have been worse.) We are very near the cut-off point to be called a depression, although as depressions go, this may be one of the mildest.

If you blame republicans for deregulation, you are missing the obvious; ALL sides of government went along with this mess. Who voted in the people who let our country down? EVERYBODY. So who is responsible?
